A Night on Earth in Scotland tells the story of the world-famous Scottish Hogmanay festivities, held annually on December 31, and captures the universal joy of celebrating the turn of the year. This seasonal release is a collaboration with acclaimed French-Japanese illustrator Erica Dorn, whose illustrations have appeared in the films of director Wes Anderson. The malt whisky is presented in unique packaging that offers a special experience upon opening the box, and Dorn's fun abstract illustrations are inspired by the historical fire rituals dominant in New Year's celebrations around the world. Hogmanay, pronounced "hog-muh-nei," is the celebrated Scottish New Year's Eve holiday. Erica Dorn's bespoke designs reveal some of the peculiar customs of Scottish Hogmanay, such as the act of "stepping first," in which it is good luck for a dark-haired visitor to be the first person to cross the threshold of their home at the stroke of midnight. According to tradition, the "first to step on" will bring three things: cookies, whiskey and coal for the fire. Each gift is meant to bring comfort and happiness to your home for the rest of the year. A Night on Earth in Scotland is created from a selection of The Macallan's exceptional American and European oak sherry casks, along with American ex-bourbon casks to deliver its rich, sweet shortbread character. A whisky that references the rich Scottish delicacy traditionally given and eaten on Hogmanay, peppered with festive notes of dried orange and spice. A perfect pairing: Drink it neat with some shortbread. Red is a color synonymous with our history and heritage. It is the outer color and represents fire, created by the coal traditionally given as a gift during the Scottish custom of the first foot, as well as bringing connotations of good fortune, success, happiness and vitality. Opening the gift box reveals a blue interior, representing the Hogmanay (New Year's Eve) night sky and the blue of Scotland's national flag, the Saltire. Upon opening the presentation box, the bottle is surrounded by rich amber colors, shimmering as if opening a chest of gold. This represents the Scottish shortbread, a rich sweet cookie consumed at Hogmanay, which is also present in the whisky's notes.
The Macallan A Night On Earth in Scotland is the new series of the Highland distillery that pays tribute to the arrival of the new year that has been celebrated in Scotland since time immemorial. A whisky that references the rich Scottish delicacy traditionally gifted and eaten at Hogmanay, the sweet cake, marked by festive notes of dried orange and spices. In the words of Sarah Burgess, The Macallan Lead Whisky Maker, "making this whisky has been an extremely personal experience for me, taking me back to growing up in our family home in Speyside, across the river from The Macallan Estate".
