The quest to understand the name of this wine and the wine itself is now the stuff of legend. While we will not reveal all, we can say that the style of the wine is a reflection of our belief that the Cape, with its Mediterranean climate, is eminently suited to blended reds. The composition of this wine is adjusted from vintage to vintage to best reflect the season and the characterful old vines that are integral to the wine's charm and personality. A meticulous work to achieve a red wine with concentration of color, flavor and tannic structure. Most of the Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault vines come from the Swartland area, a warm and arid land with vines that sink their roots deep into the subsoil. The Cabernet Sauvignon comes from vineyards in the Franschhoek and historic Stellenbosch areas. A wine with a lot of personality. Cabernet sauvignon was the only variety to be aged in French oak barrels. Aging ranged from 13 to 16 months, depending on the parcel.
As a producer, Boekenhoutskloof is a Syrah specialist, with its premium Boekenhoutskloof range selling out every vintage, and The Chocolate Block - a Syrah-based blend - is probably the most successful new wine offering to come out of South Africa in the modern era.
