Among Ultreia's range of wines, this is probably the most representative of the Bierzo style. It is made with grapes of the Mencía variety from several plots distributed in Valtuille de Abajo with soils that are mostly clayey but also sandy and stony. It is a round wine, very social, ideal for daily enjoyment.
Ultreia Mencía is a red wine produced by the Raúl Pérez winery in the Bierzo DO. This winery is a personal project of the renowned Leonese winemaker. Since he worked in the Castro Ventosa winery, which caused a real revolution in El Bierzo, Raúl Pérez has not stopped. Raúl Pérez is a philosopher of viticulture. He is also a consultant, as well as an oenologist and the most popular producer of singular wines in Spain. His name is known by many good aficionados, and some of his wines are on Robert Parker's agenda. However, his labels are produced in very small quantities, which makes his wine quite difficult to find. He makes his own wines, wines for others and in collaboration with others. He participates in family projects and in other formal and informal ones. He breaks the rules, goes to the limit. Sometimes he crosses the line and even crosses borders... Not bad considering he wanted to be a doctor.
Raúl Pérez makes wines almost in a traditional way. Very expressive, powerful and elegant wines at an affordable price. Among them, Ultreia de Valtuille, with 98 Parker points, is probably the most prestigious. Ultreia Mencía is made with Mencía 100%. The grapes come from different plots of old vineyards distributed between the towns of Valtuille de Abajo and Sala de los Barrios (León). Among the varieties of soils where the vineyards are planted, clayey soils predominate, followed, to a lesser extent, by stony and sandy soils. For the elaboration of this wine, long macerations are carried out, with little extraction, of the clusters with the stems, as well as fermentation in wooden vats. Once the wine is made, Ultreia Mencía is aged for 12 months in second and third use French oak barrels. Finally, this wine is neither filtered nor clarified at the time of bottling. Ultreia Mencia is synonymous with passion and quality. A recognized and well valued wine at an incredible price.
