Wine has a long history of use as a primitive form of medicine to cure a wide range of ailments, so much so that in 1844, when Dr. Chistopker Penfold emigrated from the UK to Australia with his family and settled on the Magill Estate, the perfect place for a vineyard, he quickly planted French vine cuttings with the aim of making a wine to treat anemia. So it was that he and his wife Mary developed a type of sherry-style fortified wine for their patients. But it was so well received that, before long, they had to expand the winery and were encouraged to produce other types of wine. Penfolds' excellence lies in their blends made from different varieties and regions, something that has been the case from the beginning. All their work is faithful to an accessible and fresh style that has led them to become one of the most representative wineries in South Australia. Among the wide range of wines they have produced in their 170-year history, Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz-Cabernet is recognized as one of Australia's favorite premium reds. Named after one of their large vineyards in the Barossa Valley, this wine is made from large vines of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah spread throughout South Australia. These vines are farmed using environmentally friendly agriculture and when the grapes arrive at the winery, the wine is vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and aged for 10 months in seasoned oak barrels. The result of this work is a wine full of fruity flavor with a firm, well-balanced structure. An introduction to a collection of wines that, both for its accessibility and its good bottle aging potential, conquers wherever it goes.
