It is a fleshy, structured, elegant red wine, with a fruity finish and great freshness.
At Marqués de Riscal there were winemaker's wines within its Reserva Histórica, such as Reserva Medoc and XR, but they were not commercial names. In the style of the Bordeaux foremen, the winemaker would write the word XR with chalk on the barrels in which he found some special characteristics that were not found in others. These wines were never marketed, but they were always a reference for the cellar master. This custom lasted almost a century, between the vintages of 1869 and 1964. XR by Marqués de Riscal is a tribute to all the cellar masters who, from Jean Pineau to the present day, have contributed to forging a part of the best history of Spanish wine at Marqués de Riscal.
The historic Riojan winery presents this vintage of an 'Extra Rouge' wine, which is a step further, both in quality and in terms of the classic aging category indicated in its name. Its select origin, the best Tempranillo and Graciano vineyards in Elciego, in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, and a meticulous and precise elaboration, with 24 months of aging in American oak barrels, make it one of the top wines of the centenary Rioja firm. Winner of a gold medal at the Berliner Wine Trophy 2022.
