Description

Cultivated since Roman times, the steeply terraced vineyards of Ribeira Sacra are some of the most picturesque and treacherous to work in the world of wine, viticulture here is not for the faint of heart, it takes energetic determination, optimism, a sense of tradition and a willingness to collaborate. All these qualities are embodied by Pedro Rodriguez de Guimaro. Pedro descends from a long line of colleiteiros working in the Amandi area, with vineyards planted on slate facing south, just above the Sil River. Prior to 1991, Pedro's family produced small quantities of wine for their own consumption and sold their wine in demijohns to local cantinas. He was a winemaker from Leon and it would soon be a close family friend, Luis Buitron, who helped the Rodriguez family begin bottling their wines. They named their winery Guímaro, which means "rebel," after Pedro's grandfather. Guímaro was one of the first wineries to join the appellation in 1996. Gradually they recovered old-fashioned winemaking methods: with fermentations, foot treading in open vessels and raspón (stems) inclusion, working with low sulfur content and aging in used barrels. This approach gives us Finca Meixemán, Finca Capeliños, Finca Pombeiras, A Ponte, which are some of the most distinctive and oldest wines produced in the winery today.
