Endings are always the beginning of something new; perhaps even something better than everything that came before. Proof of this is José Manuel Pérez Oveja. He is back stronger than ever. After closing his first chapter in Viña Pedrosa, the family winery where he spent 30 years, the new chapter of his story is written in a new stage of his life in which he works alone (with the push of his wife Silvia Ortega) in Dominio de Calogía, his new winery full of personality. His letter of introduction: Dominio de Calogía, a single varietal Tinto Fino (Tempranillo), and what an introduction it is! With this personal project, started in the spring of 2020, José Manuel Pérez's priorities have changed. He now focuses on aspects that were unthinkable before (with large production volumes), such as yields and kilos per vine. Now, José Manuel seeks quality rather than quantity in order to be able to work without pressure or inertia. His dream, which has undoubtedly come true, takes place on 20 hectares of his own vineyard, with old vines (between 30 and 70 years old), located at an altitude of 800 meters in the heart of the Ribera del Duero DO (between the municipalities of Roa and Pedrosa de Duero). Here, the soils are mixed, with different typologies ranging from limestone to stony and clay soils. In the center of this estate, in the style of a French domaine, are the new, state-of-the-art cellars and facilities, in which nearly 4 million euros have been invested. As for the human side of the business, Dominio de Calogía has a young and small team, led on the technical side by Jorge Monge. The sum of all this, with the fuel of enthusiasm, has quickly positioned Dominio de Calogía as one of the red wines of reference, with more than half of the production (25,923 bottles) sold in foreign markets. A true phoenix of Ribera del Duero.
