This is the oldest whiskey distillery in the world, which operated under license. The history of Bushmills goes back 400 years, in the time of monks and alchemists, distilling the oldest Irish whiskey. On April 20, 1608 Sir Thomas Phillips was granted the official license to distill "uisce beatha" by King James I, thus becoming the first legal whiskey distillery in the "Rowte" area of County Antrim. Bushmills is named after the town where it is distilled and this town, Bushmills, has only 1,319 inhabitants. Located on the north coast of Ireland, a mile away from the spectacular Giant's Causeway rock formation, it has two mills on the banks of the Bush River, which flows near the distillery. Bushmills whiskey is still distilled at the Old Bushmills Distillery.
